No. 15 Men's Golf in 33rd place after Day 1 of NCAA Division III Championships

BOULDER CITY, Nev. — The No. 15 Wittenberg men's golf team is in 33rd place after posting a score of 16-over-par in Tueday's first round of the NCAA Division III Championships.
The Basics
- Venues: Boulder Creek Golf Club - Boulder City, Nev., Par 72, Yardage: 7,377; The Legacy Golf Club - Boulder City, Nev., Par 72, Yardage: 7,077
- The tournament is hosted by UNLV and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
- Wittenberg is ranked No. 15 nationally in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek NCAA Division III Coaches Poll, which was released on May 3, and is No. 16 in the latest NCAA Division III Scoreboard rankings, powered by Clippd, which was released on Monday.
- The Tigers are in the 43-team field as an at-large selection after finishing as the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships runner-up to Kenyon. Senior J.F. Aber (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) was the individual medalist at the NCACs.
- Wittenberg, the 2017 Division III national champion, is making its third straight appearance, and 29th overall, in the NCAA Championships. They finished seventh in 2022 at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., and 13th last year at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Ky.
- The team and individual champions will be determined after 72 holes of play or the conclusion of the last fully completed round. The field consists of 221 competitors. After 36 holes of competition, the field will be cut to the top 18 teams and top six individuals not on one of those teams.
- No. 3 Carnegie Mellon is the defending champion.
The Tournament - Day 1
- Tuesday's opening round featured half the field playing at Boulder Creek Golf Club and the other half playing at The Legacy Golf Club. The teams will switch courses for Wednesday's second round.
- Wittenberg opened play at The Legacy Golf Club and shot a 16-over-par 304 through 18 holes to finish the day in 33rd place in the 43-team field. The Tigers are 10 strokes back of the 18th spot needed to make the cut following Wednesday's second round.
- Each of the top five teams in the standings played their opening rounds at Boulder Creek Golf Club. No. 1 Methodist leads the field by one stroke with a 17-under-par 271. No. 2 Emory is second at 16-under-par, No. 18 Redlands is third at 13-under-par, No. 5 Illinois Wesleyan is fourth at 8-uncer-par, and No. 6 Lynchburg is fifth at 7-under-par.
- Aber, sophomore Mark Sulek (Delaware, Ohio/Hayes), junior Jake Yarbrough (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) and senior Nicklaus Pidgeon (Homeworth, Ohio/West Branch) shot matching scores of a 4-over-par 76 and are tied for 121st in the 221-man field. The fifth member of the Tigers' lineup, junior Joshua Wright (Wadsworth, Ohio/Akron Hoban) is tied for 215th with a 14-over-par 86.
- Sulek led the Tigers in birdies on the day with three.
- Emory's Jackson Klutznick leads the individual standings after Day 1 with an 8-under-par 64. Washington & Lee's Jonathan McEwen is second at 7-under-par, and there is a three-way tie for third at 6-under-par.
