Clarence Stoughton is the first non-athlete or coach to be inducted into the Wittenberg Hall of Honor. He is credited with starting the Wittenberg winning tradition in football and basketball by hiring Bill Edwards as athletic director and football coach and Ray Mears as basketball coach in 1956. A native of Rochester, N.Y., Stoughton was president of Wittenberg from 1949 to 1963. He died August 31, 1975.
