After two regular season championship seasons in Springfield, interim head softball coach Kennedy Haynes has resigned from her position, Director of Athletics and Recreation Dr. Gary Williams announced.
The North Coast Athletic Conference announced this year’s conference awards on Wednesday morning, as the Tigers landed four players on the first team, two players on the second team, and Chelsea Zang as the Pitcher of the Year.
After defeating Allegheny a day prior, and falling to DePauw in the nightcap of the first day of tournament action, Wittenberg and Denison needed 13 innings to decide who would move on and face DePauw in the championship game.

The Tigers took two games from the Fighting Scots by the sore of 2-0 and 6-4 on their way to an impressive 15-1 mark in NCAC league play. The Tigers reward is the #1 seed in the 2018 NCAC Tournament, as well homefield advantage as this year’s tournament will be played at Wittenberg on May 4 and May 5.
Hopkin’s career day at the plate featured a home-run in game one, followed up by a solo shot in the second inning, and a two-run homer to deep center-field in the fourth inning.
Tim Kremchek, ‘81 (and his wife, Hilary, ‘82) have issued a challenge to the Wittenberg Athletic Department. If we can get 220 donors and raise alumni participation by 1%, by April 25, they will give a gift of $25,000 to the athletic department.
In two appearances, Zang posted a 2-0 record in the circle for the Tigers. In 14 innings pitched, Zang recorded a 1.29 ERA with five strikeouts, allowing 12 hits and two earned runs.
The Tigers took down the previously undefeated DePauw Tigers on their home turf 7-5 and 8-4. While game two was called due to darkness, the Tigers lead for the majority. Game one featured a Wittenberg comeback that took the wind out of DePauw’s sails for the remainder of the day.
Wittenberg swept Kenyon College in historic fashion on Friday afternoon, as Chelsea Zang and Katelyn Niswonger pitched a combined no-hitter for the Tigers. The 19-0 win over Kenyon served as the second Tiger no-hitter of the season, and the second of the week for that matter, as Wittenberg’s offense quite possibly out shined their efforts in the circle on Friday.
Toetz led the Tigers to a series sweep of Allegheny last weekend to open up NCAC play this season. In the two games, Toetz batted .625 (5-for-8) with two home runs, two runs scored and six RBI.
Wittenberg softball moved to 6-8 on the year with a split against Alma College on Saturday. The Tigers were set to face off against Alma for the home-opener in Springfield on Saturday, but winter-like weather graced the Springfield area, calling for the home-opener to be postponed, as the team traveled to Alma for their first games since a successful Arizona Spring Break trip.
Wittenberg softball concluded a successful Spring Break trip to Arizona with two decisive victories over Rockford University and Bethany Lutheran. The Tigers stomped Rockford 10-2 in game one, before Abby Haab tossed a one-hitter in an 11-0 win against Bethan Lutheran.
In a game that saw both starting pitchers go the distance, and all the scoring take place in the first two innings, Chelsea Zang scattered seven hits, while Wittenberg’s defense played a full game of error free softball.
Wittenberg got back in the win column with a one-run victory over St. John Fisher on Tuesday. The Tigers hung on to take down SJF 4-3 after taking a 4-1 lead into the sixth inning.
he Tigers trailed 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning before clawing back to 5-4 after a Katy Baumgartner two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh innings.
After exploding for 19 runs earlier in the day, Wittenberg softball found themselves in a good old-fashioned pitcher’s duel on Saturday afternoon against Whitworth. The Tigers eventually fell 1-0, as both Whitworth’s starting pitcher, and Abby Haab, went the distance.
