Tigers Split their Home Opener against Thomas More

Springfield, Ohio—Wittenberg softball moved to 7-11 on the season with a split against Thomas More College on Friday. The Tigers played well in their home opener as they lost a 1-0 nail biter in the first leg and cruised to a 5-1 victory in the second leg of the double-header. The Tigers played well on both sides of the ball, scoring five runs and only allowing five hits through both contests.

GAME ONE NOTES: Runs were hard to come by in this game as both starters went the distance and allowed six combined hits. Thomas More was first to score in the top of the fourth inning on a fielder's choice that plated one run. Chelsea Zang put together a great performance, notching a one-hit complete game with seven strikeouts, doing her best to keep Wittenberg within striking distance. Missy Lee led the Tigers with two hits and made it as far as third base but couldn't conquer that last 60 feet to put a run on the board in the fifth. The Tigers connected for five hits on the day but could not plate a run before the final called strike.

GAME TWO NOTES: The bats came alive for the Tigers after the brief intermission between games and behind another stellar pitching performance, picked up the win. In the bottom of the third, Wittenberg strung together three hits to load the bases, and plated two runs on a Missy Lee groundout to first base. The Tigers would find themselves in another bases loaded situation, scoring three runs off of two sacrifice hits and a single by Victoria Toetz. The trio of Elise Freeland, Abby Curnutte, and Toetz totaled six hits on the day as Wittenberg scattered nine hits in the game. Abby Haab picked up her third win of the season, pitching to the tune of a complete game four-hitter. Haab only allowed one run in the top of the sixth and fanned five for the 5-1 victory on Friday.

UP NEXT: The Tigers open up conference play next Saturday the 31st against the Gators of Allegheny College at Betty Doughman-Dillahunt field. First pitch of the double-header is set for 1:00 PM.
