Tigers Upend Moravian 19-3

Tuscon, Arizona—Wittenberg softball recorded their first win of the year in a big way on Saturday, as the Tigers upended Moravian 19-3. The Tigers scored eight runs in the first two innings and hung seven runs on Moravian in the fourth before tacking on five more in the fifth. The win gave freshman hurler Katelyn Niswonger her first win as a Tiger, as Niswonger made her season debut the day before against East Texas Baptist University. As a team, the Tiger's offense exploded for 16 hits, including four that went for extra bases.

OFFENSIVE NOTES: Sophomore shortstop Olivia Hopkins had a monster day at the dish, as the Mason, Ohio native tallied a career high six RBI's on a two-for-four day at the plate. Hopkins recorded a bases clearing double in the fourth inning before connecting on a three-run homer in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Lauren Buelow also had a big day at the plate, as the junior recorded two hits and four RBI's in the contest. Buelow recorded singles that plated two in the first and the fourth inning of Saturday's big win, as the first inning proved to be a big one for the Tigers. As a team, the Tigers stranded eight while putting up 19 runs, and struck out once in 36 at bats against Moravian.

DEFENSIVE NOTES: Niswonger recorded the win after logging three innings of two hit softball for the Tigers. Scattering two earned runs over her three innings of work, Niswonger struck out three and walked three before being relieved by Chelsea Zang in the fourth. Zang recorded two innings of work in the circle, as the senior hurler struck out two and allowed two hits in the run-rule shortened contest.

UP NEXT: Wittenberg is back in action against Whitworth later this afternoon.
