Softball Falls to Coe 7-5

TUSCON, Arizona—Wittenberg softball fell to Coe College 7-5 on Tuesday, as the Tigers were outhit 13-9 in the contest. Despite surrendering seven earned runs in the contest, senior hurler Abby Haab struck out a season high nine Kohawk's in the narrow defeat. Wittenberg took a lead into the fifth inning at 5-3, before Coe managed to knot things up and take the lead in the fifth and add on an insurance run in the seventh. Wittenberg falls to 2-6 overall while Coe moves to 3-6 on the year.

OFFENSIVE NOTES: Rachel Black put the Tigers on the board early, as the junior catcher scored Olivia Hopkins on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first innings. Wittenberg grew their lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the second, as Abby Curnutte recorded a two-RBI single into centerfield, plating Elise Freeland and Briana Gibson. Wittenberg tacked on their fifth and final run in the third inning after a Lauren Buelow double plated Katy Baumgartner. Freeland led the Tigers with three hits and an RBI, while Curnutte recorded two RBI's and a walk on the day. The Tigers struck out twice in 27 at bats while drawing four walks as a team.

DEFENSIVE NOTES: Haab logged seven innings of work in the circle for Wittenberg, scattering 13 hits while facing 37 batters. The Dublin, Ohio native issued one walk and struck out nine in the game, as the Tigers committed two errors in the loss. Wittenberg ran into a buzz-saw on the mound, as the Kohawk's reliever didn't' allow a Tiger hit in the final two innings of the game.
