    Another banner fall sports season has reaped tangible rewards for 33 Wittenberg University athletes who were selected to All-North Coast Athletic Conference teams. In addition, several Tiger athletes received regional and national recognition from various organizations, including three first-team All-America selections to date.

    The Wittenberg University Tiger field hockey team put together yet another outstanding season in 2002, finishing with a 17-4 overall record and a mark of 10-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The list of accomplishments was lengthy, led by NCAC regular season and tournament championships and the fifth NCAA Division III Tournament berth in school history.

    Field Hockey (17-4, 10-2 NCAC) Coach: Marianne Beshara (third season) The high-scoring Tiger field hockey team, champion of the 2002 North Coast Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles, was defeated 3-0 by Williams College in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament Friday afternoon at Messiah College in Grantham, Pa. Williams was champion of the Northeast Athletic Conference and the 14th ranked team in the country coming into the tournament. Wittenberg, ranked 13th by the American Field Hockey Coaches Association, finishes its season at 17-4 overall.

  • Tigers Take First Ever NCAC Championship Title

    It was a good weekend to be a Wittenberg Tiger. The field hockey team followed the volleyball squad’s lead by winning the first-ever NCAC tournament championship with a 6-2 demolition of Wooster Saturday night at Edwards-Maurer Field. The tourney title capped a remarkable regular season for the Tigers that included a regular season NCAC championship and now an invitation to the NCAA Division III tournament for the fifth time in school history and the first time since 1998.

  • Wittenberg Field Hockey Earns Berth In NCAA Division III Tournament

    The Wittenberg University Tigers are back in the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament for the first time since 1998. The Tigers, champions of the North Coast Athletic Conference with a 17-3 overall record, open the tournament at 1 p.m., Friday, Nov. 15, at Messiah College in Grantham, Pa., against Williams College. Both teams have first-round byes.

Ten goals in two games last week, while conceding just one, earned the Tigers both the North Coast Athletic Conference regular season championship and an NCAC semifinal victory over Oberlin. The top-seeded Tigers, who are ranked No. 14 in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association national poll and No. 1 in the Midwest Region, moved into the NCAC tournament title game against Wooster on Saturday, Nov. 9.

    Wittenberg University clinched the North Coast Athletic Conference regular season championship with a 6-1 victory over Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday, Oct. 29. In the regular season finale, which also served as Senior Recognition Night, the Tigers demolished their visitors with a season-high six goals to improve to 15-3 overall and 10-2 in the NCAC.

    The Wittenberg field hockey team saw its perfect regular season come to an end over the weekend in a 1-0 defeat at Denison on Saturday, but the Tigers responded like the champions they hope to become in 2002, capturing a 4-0 victory at Kenyon on Tuesday. That win kept Wittenberg one game ahead of both Denison and defending champion Wooster in the NCAC race.

As a result, the Tigers continued to hold strong in the national rankings that are dominated by traditional east coast powers, moving up two spots to No. 12. Wittenberg has the most wins of any team in the poll, which was released Monday evening.

The Tigers, who have never had a losing record at any time in Beshara’s three seasons at the helm, have the most wins of any team in the nation.

    The Wittenberg field hockey team had an inspiring start to the 2002 season, winning its first four games and moving all the way to No. 13 in the first National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll on Sept. 10. The start is a replica of last season's, which led the Tigers to a 13-6 overall record, including a 10-2 NCAC mark and a second-place finish in the conference race.
