Wittenberg Defeats Nationally Ranked Carthage

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers swept away visiting Carthage in their second match of the Wittenberg Fall Classic, capturing a 3-0 win by game scores of 30-12, 30-22, 30-23. It was Wittenberg's ninth straight win.

It also improved Wittenberg to 25-4 overall on the 2005 season, including a mark of 8-4 against regionally ranked opponents and 5-2 against teams currently ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association top 25. Carthage crept into the top 25 for the first time in 2005 earlier in the week.

Wittenberg did it with a precise offensive attack, spreading the ball around and finishing with a sterling attack percentage of .308. Freshman Jackie Williams led the way, pounding 12 kills against just three errors in 21 attempts for a kill percentage of .429. Sophomore Emily Bell also had 12 kills, while sophomore Caitlin Augustus was outstanding in the middle, pounding five kills on 11 attempts without making an attack error.

Defensively, freshman Laura Fender finished with 20 digs and Bell added 12. The sophomore setting duo of Ashley Anderson and Sarah Matesich was sound, contributing 16 and 22 assists respectively.
