Tigers Pull Away For 21-Stroke Win At Denison Invitational

GRANVILLE, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers opened the 2014-15 season in the best way possible after claiming a dominant 21-stroke victory at the Denison Invitational.

Wittenberg lapped the 16-team field, which included five North Coast Athletic Conference rivals, over two rounds at historic Granville Golf Course. The Tigers posted rounds of 320 and 317 to finish with a total of 637, comfortably ahead of Ursuline at 658 and Bridgewater at 661.

Not only did the Tigers enjoy tremendous success as a team, but freshman Jane Hopkinson-Wood (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) was nothing short of sensational in her collegiate debut. Hopkinson-Wood followed up a first-round 78 with a sizzling 73 on Day 2 to finish with a total of 151 and a six-stroke victory.

Hopkinson-Wood tied the school record with her second-round score of 73, matching the score posted by current senior Nicole Waers (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Perry) at the Washington University Invitational in 2012. Her two-round score of 151 is the second-best in program history, matching current junior Allie Lawwill (Springboro, Ohio/Middletown) and her score at the 2012 BSC Southern Shootout.

Sophomore Macy Hubbard (Mason, Ohio/Mason) was next for Wittenberg with a two-round total of 161 to finish sixth. She was followed by senior Carolyn Wong (Naperville, Ill./Central) with a 163, good for ninth, Lawwill with a 166 to place 11th, and junior Maggie Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) with a 168 to finish 13th.
