Tigers Open 2013 Campaign With Fourth Place At Olivet

MARSHALL, Mich. - The Wittenberg women's golf team opened the 2013-14 season with a fourth-place finish in the Olivet Labor Day Tee-Off.

The Tigers were one of four nationally ranked teams in the eight-team field, which was paced by third-ranked Washington University with a tremendous two-day total of 608. The Bears finished six strokes ahead of 17th-ranked host Olivet.

St. Mary's (Ind.) took third position with a 672, followed closely by Wittenberg, which is ranked No. 14 in the Golf World preseason coaches' poll, at 674.

Individually, the Tigers got a top-10 finish from sophomore Allie Lawwill (Springboro, Ohio/Middletown), who carded rounds of 80 and 83 to finish ninth with a score of 163. She was followed by sophomore Maggie Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore), who covered the par-72, 5,834-yard Medalist Golf Club in rounds of 85 and 83 to finish 13th.

Rounding things out for Wittenberg were junior Nicole Waers (Canton, Ohio/Perry) in 19th with a 170, junior Carolyn Wong (Naperville, Ill./Central) in 24th with a 173, and senior Deanna Mychalishyn (Mason, Ohio/Mason) in 25th with a 174.

After two weeks of practice, the Tigers will return to competition at Illinois Wesleyan Sept. 14-15. Wittenberg finished 26 strokes ahead of the Titans in the Labor Day Tee-Off.
