Softball sweeps doubleheader with Wooster

SPRINGFIELD — The Wittenberg softball team swept a doubleheader with Wooster in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday. The Tigers won 4-3 in walkoff fashion in a 10-inning Game 1 and got a 4-0 victory in Game 2.

The Basics

  • Records: Wittenberg (17-15 overall, 3-3 NCAC), Wooster (14-16 overall, 5-3 NCAC)

Stat Leaders - Game 1

  • Senior Julia Burch (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) led the Tiger offense, going 4-for-6 with a double to go with one RBI and two runs scored.
  • Sophomore Ashlynn Stamper (Yellow Springs, Ohio/Beavercreek) was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
  • Senior Hanna Ecker (Heath, Ohio/Heath) tallied three hits.
  • Junior Samantha Zungri (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) posted two hits, including a double, to go with one run.
  • Sophomore Lilly James Troy, Ohio/Troy) earned the win in the circle for the Tigers. She allowed one unearned run on four hits while striking out five over the final 5.1 innings and improved to 6-2 on the season.
  • Sophomore Julia Hall (Powell, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) got the pitching start for Wittenberg. She allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out one over 4.2 innings.
  • Emma Hetkey led the Wooster offense with three hits and one run.

Game 1 - Wittenberg 4, Wooster 3 (10 inn.)

  • The Tigers took a 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout from Stamper in the bottom of the third inning.
  • The Fighting Scots took the lead in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs, but Stamper tied the score in the bottom of the frame on an RBI double.
  • The teams remained tied at 2-2 through regulation, forcing the game to extra innings.
  • With the game still tied in the 10th inning, rules dictate that each team begin their half of the inning with a runner on second base. Wooster was able to get that runner home in the top of the 10th for a 3-2 lead.
  • Zungri started the bottom of the 10th on second base and advanced to third on a two-out passed ball. She then scored on a ball-four wild pitch that walked graduate student Samantha Casteel (Loveland, Ohio/Little Miami). After Casteel stole second base, she advanced to third on a single from junior Harper Crews (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln).
  • With runners on first and third, Burch provided the walkoff hit, as a single up the middle scored Casteel from third to give the Tigers the victory.
  • Wittenberg out-hit Wooster by a 16-9 margin and committed two errors to the Scots' none.

Stat Leaders - Game 2

  • Stamper led the Wittenberg offense, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one stolen base.
  • Burch was 1-for-3 with one RBI, two runs scored and one steal.
  • Sophomore Meghan McCans (Arcanum, Ohio/Arcanum) was 1-for-4 with one run.
  • Ecker was 1-for-4 with one RBI.
  • Senior Kira van Ravensberg (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) earned the win in the circle for the Tigers, improving to 7-7 on the season. She pitched four scoreless innings, allowing just three hits.
  • Hall pitched the next 1.2 innings and gave up three hits while striking out one.
  • James pitched the final 1.1 innings and tallied one strikeout in earning her seventh save of the season.

Game 2 - Wittenberg 4, Wooster 0

  • Wittenberg opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single from Stamper and getting another run on a Wooster error for a 2-0 lead.
  • An RBI single from Burch put the Tigers up 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Wittenberg capped the scoring with an RBI single from Stamper in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Wittenberg out-hit Wooster by a 8-6 margin and committed one error to the Scots' four.

  • On Game 1: "Something we were really working on is not giving up until the last out, and that was our mindset going into the last inning. We didn't freak out when they got a run on us, and even though we got two outs right away, we didn't give up. We played until the end."

Records & Milestones

  • Wittenberg is now 33-20 all-time against Wooster.
  • Burch has 152 hits and 40 steals in her career. She is tied for sixth all-time at Wittenberg in steals and ranks seventh all-time in hits.
  • Ecker has 116 hits and 71 RBIs in her career. She is 27 hits and seven RBIs shy of joining the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
  • McCans has 32 steals this season and 40 in her career. She is tied for second all-time at Wittenberg on the single-season steal list and is tied for sixth on the program's all-time list for career steals.
  • In the circle, van Ravensberg has 27 career wins, which ranks ninth in program history. She also has 114 career strikeouts, which ranks 10th all-time at Wittenberg.
  • James has 10 career saves, which is a program record.
  • The Tigers have tallied a program single-season record 112 stolen bases this year. The prior record was 100 set in 2013.
