Softball splits with Alma, Marietta on Day 2 of BSN Sports Classic

MARIETTA — The Wittenberg softball team fell 13-1 to Alma in six innings and defeated Marietta 13-6 on Sunday in the Marietta BSN Sports Classic.

The Basics

  • Records: Wittenberg (10-10 overall), Alma (10-4 overall), Marietta (6-7 overall)
  • Venue: Marietta Field - Marietta, Ohio
  • Wittenberg defeated Alma 3-2 and fell to Marietta 4-2 in the BSN Sports Classic on Saturday.

Stat Leaders vs. Alma

  • Freshman Rebekah Giel (Amelia, Ohio/West Clermont) led the Wittenberg offense with two hits, including a double, and one RBI.
  • Senior Julia Burch (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) added two hits and one run scored.
  • Sophomore Julia Hall (Powell, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) got the pitching start for the Tigers and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out one over three innings. Junior Samantha Zungri (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) and sophomore Lilly James (Troy, Ohio/Troy) combined to pitch three relief innings and combined for five strikeouts.
  • Jordyn Porter led the Alma offense with three hits, including a double, to go with three RBIs and three runs scored.
  • Mikaylyn Kenney improved to 6-1 in the circle for Alma, pitching five innings and tallying 10 strikeouts.

Game 1 - Alma 13, Wittenberg 1 (6 inn.)

  • Alma scored a run in each of the second and third innings.
  • Wittenberg scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Burch and sophomore Meghan McCans (Arcanum, Ohio/Arcanum) reached base via a single and walk, respectively, and Giel followed with an RBI double to bring the Tigers within one, 2-1.
  • The Scots answered with four runs in the top of the fifth inning and added seven more in the sixth, ultimately ending the game early via the NCAA mercy rule.
  • Alma out-hit Wittenberg by a 12-4 margin and committed no errors to the Tigers' two.

Stat Leaders vs. Marietta

  • Zungri led the Wittenberg offense with four hits, two RBIs and four runs scored.
  • Freshman Kyleigh Bartlett (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) finished with three hits and three RBIs.
  • Sophomore Ashlynn Stamper (Yellow Springs, Ohio/Beavercreek) tallied three hits, one RBI and two runs scored.
  • Senior Hanna Ecker (Heath, Ohio/Heath) added two hits, including a triple, two RBIs and one run.
  • Burch posted two hits and two runs.
  • Freshman Syd Little (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) recorded one hit and two RBIs.
  • Senior Kira van Ravensberg (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) earned the win in the pitching circle, improving to 4-4 on the season. She allowed six runs (four earned) on 12 hits and one walk while striking out three over 5.1 innings.
  • James pitched the final 1.2 innings and allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out two in picking up her third save of the season.
  • Jillian Middleton led the Marietta offense with four hits and two RBIs.

Game 2 - Wittenberg 13, Marietta 6

  • The Tigers opened the scoring with an RBI groundout from Bartlett in the top of the second.
  • The Pioneers tied the score with a run in the bottom of the second, but the Tigers came right back with an RBI triple from Ecker for a 2-1 lead in the top of the third.
  • Marietta plated two runs in the bottom of the third for a 3-2 edge and added three more runs in the fourth to increase its lead to 6-2. But the Pioneers would not score again.
  • Wittenberg took a 7-6 lead with five runs in the top of the fifth highlighted by RBI singles from Ecker and Bartlett.
  • The Tigers added two runs in the sixth via RBI singles from Stamper and Bartlett for a 9-6 lead.
  • Wittenberg capped the scoring with 2-RBI singles from Zungri and Little in the top of the seventh.
  • Wittenberg out-hit Marietta by a 17-13 margin and committed one error to the Pioneers' three.

Records & Milestones

  • Wittenberg is now 7-10 all-time against Marietta and 2-12 all-time against Alma.
  • Burch has 133 hits and 31 steals in her career. She ranks eighth all-time at Wittenberg in steals and 10th all-time in hits.
  • Ecker has 103 hits and 64 RBIs in her career. She is 27 hits and 14 RBIs shy of joining the program's all-time top 10 in that category.
  • McCans has 20 steals this season and 28 in her career. She ranks ninth all-time at Wittenberg on the single-season steal list and is tied for eighth on the program's all-time top 10 list for career steals.
  • In the circle, van Ravensberg has 24 career wins, which ranks ninth in program history. She also has 103 career strikeouts, which is three shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in that category.
  • James now has six career saves, which ties the program record set by Sarah Waugh from 1994-97.
