Softball falls to Marietta, defeats Alma on Day 1 of BSN Sports Classic

MARIETTA — The Wittenberg softball team fell 4-2 to Marietta and defeated Alma 3-2 on Saturday in the Marietta BSN Sports Classic.

The Basics

  • Records: Wittenberg (9-9 overall), Marietta (5-6 overall), Alma (9-3 overall)
  • Venue: Marietta Field - Marietta, Ohio

Stat Leaders vs. Marietta

  • Sophomore Meghan McCans (Arcanum, Ohio/Arcanum) led the Tigers with three hits in the game, including a double, to go with one stolen base.
  • Sophomore Ashlynn Stamper (Yellow Springs, Ohio/Beavercreek) had the Tigers' other extra-base hit in the game with a double to go with one RBI and one run scored.
  • Sophomore Julia Hall (Powell, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) got the pitching start for Wittenberg and gave up four runs on nine hits and one walk over 5.1 innings.
  • Four Pioneers tallied two hits each.

Game 1 - Marietta 4, Wittenberg 2

  • Marietta plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning via a pair of RBI singles and an RBI walk.
  • Junior Samantha Zungri (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) put the Tigers on the board in the top of the second after drawing a one-out walk, stealing second and scoring on the throw.
  • The Pioneers increased their lead to 4-1 on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Stamper hit a leadoff home run in the top of the sixth, but the Tigers were unable to get any closer as Amelia Timko recorded the save to preserve the win for Marietta.
  • Marietta out-hit Wittenberg by a 10-8 margin and committed one error to the Tigers' none.

Stat Leaders vs. Alma

  • Stamper led the Wittenberg offense with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Both of her hits went for extra bases in the form of a home run and a double.
  • McCans added a double for the Tigers' other extra-base hit in the game.
  • Senior Julia Burch (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) tallied one hit and one RBI.
  • Sophomore Lilly James (Troy, Ohio/Troy) earned the win in the circle, improving to 5-2 on the season after pitching 3.1 scoreless relief innings. She allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out three.
  • Senior Kira van Ravensberg (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) got the pitching start for the Tigers and allowed two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out two over 3.2 innings.
  • Jordyn Porter led Alma with two hits in the game, and starting pitcher Morgan Westall pitched all seven innings and tallied five strikeouts.

Game 2 - Wittenberg 3, Alma 2

  • Wittenberg got the scoring started in the top of the second inning after a one-out single from freshman Caylee Roe (Piqua, Ohio/Piqua). With two outs, Stamper hit a two-run homer to put the Tigers up early.
  • Alma came back to tie the score at 2-all with an RBI double in the bottom of the second and an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.
  • With the score still tied, Stamper hit a double to lead off the top of the seventh. She later advanced to third base on a groundout that gave the Tigers two outs in the frame. Burch then reached base safely courtesy of a Marietta error that plated Stamper to put Wittenberg up 3-2.
  • James preserved that lead with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to secure the win for the Tigers.
  • Wittenberg out-hit Alma by an 8-5 margin and committed four errors to Alma's one.

Records & Milestones

  • Wittenberg is now 6-10 all-time against Marietta and 2-11 all-time against Alma.
  • Burch has 129 hits and 30 steals in her career. She ranks eighth all-time at Wittenberg in steals and is one hit shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in that category.
  • Senior Hanna Ecker (Heath, Ohio/Heath) has 101 hits and 62 RBIs in her career. She is 29 hits and 16 RBIs shy of joining the program's all-time top 10 in that category.
  • McCans has 19 steals this season and 27 in her career. She ranks ninth all-time at Wittenberg on the single-season steal list and is tied for ninth on the program's all-time top 10 list for career steals.
  • In the circle, van Ravensberg has 23 career wins, which ranks ninth in program history. She also has 100 career strikeouts, which is six shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in that category.
