Softball splits with Emmanuel, Nebraska Wesleyan in penultimate day in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Wittenberg softball team continued its 10-game spring break trip Thursday with a 3-0 loss to Emmanuel and a 4-3 win over Nebraska Wesleyan in its penultimate day in Florida.

The Basics

  • Records: Wittenberg (7-5 overall), Emmanuel (3-3 overall), Nebraska Wesleyan (7-4 overall)
  • Venue: Legends Way Ballfields - Clermont, Fla.

Stat Leaders - vs. Emmanuel

  • Senior Hanna Ecker (Heath, Ohio/Heath) led the Wittenberg offense with two hits.
  • Sophomore Meghan McCans (Arcanum, Ohio/Arcanum), freshmen Rebekah Giel (Amelia, Ohio/West Clermont), Caylee Roe (Piqua, Ohio/Piqua) and Syd Little (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) and junior Harper Crews (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) had one hit each.
  • Junior Samantha Zungri (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) pitched 3.1 innings in relief of sophomore starter Julia Hall (Powell, Ohio/Bishop Watterson). Zungri allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out four.
  • Sophomore Lilly James (Troy, Ohio/Troy) pitched the final 1.2 innings and gave up just one hit while striking out two.
  • Abigail Farr led the Emmanuel offense with three hits.
  • Madison Marks pitched all seven innings for Emmanuel, allowing seven hits and one walk while striking out eight in the shutout.

Game 1 - Emmanuel 3, Wittenberg 0

  • Emmanuel opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning after loading the bases with no outs. The Saints later scored on an RBI walk and RBI sac fly.
  • In the top of the third, the Tigers put runners on first and third with two outs but were unable to score.
  • Wittenberg got runners on first and second with back-to-back two-out singles from Giel and Roe in the top of the fourth but was unable to bring them home.
  • The Saints plated their final run in the bottom of the fourth via a fielder's choice.
  • Both teams finished with seven hits, and Wittenberg committed one error to Emmanuel's none.

Stat Leaders - vs. Nebraska Wesleyan

  • McCans and senior Julia Burch (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) had two hits each for the Tigers.
  • Graduate student Samantha Casteel (Loveland, Ohio/Little Miami) added a hit and an RBI.
  • Burch and Casteel both hit doubles in the game.
  • Ecker and Roe tallied one RBI each.
  • Senior Kira van Ravensberg (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) got the pitching start for the Tigers and earned the win to improve to 3-2 on the season. She allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk while striking out one.
  • James earned her second save of the season after pitching a scoreless top of the seventh inning.
  • Hanna Roth led the NWU offense with two hits, including a double.

Game 2 - Wittenberg 4, Nebraska Wesleyan 3

  • NWU opened the scoring with a run in each of the first and fourth innings for a 2-0 lead.
  • Wittenberg tied the score in the bottom of the fourth on RBIs from Ecker and Roe.
  • NWU retook the lead at 3-2 on an RBI fielder's choice in the top of the fifth.
  • Castell tied the score on a one-out RBI double in the bottom of the fifth, and Casteel later scored on a passed ball with two outs to put the Tigers up 4-3.
  • After NWU led off the top of the seventh with a double, the Tigers brought James into the pitching circle in relief of van Ravensberg.
  • James hit the first batter she faced, and a sac bunt advanced the runners to second and third, but she induced a popout and a flyout to end the game and secure the victory for the Tigers.
  • Both teams recorded seven hits in the game, and Wittenberg committed one error to NWU's none.

Records & Milestones

  • Wittenberg is now 4-2 all-time against Emmanuel. This marked the first all-time meeting between Wittenberg and Nebraska Wesleyan.
  • Burch has 121 hits and 26 steals in her career. She ranks 10th all-time at Wittenberg in steals and is nine hits shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in that category.
  • Ecker needs three hits to reach 100 for her career. She also has 56 RBIs in her career, which is 22 shy of joining the program's all-time top 10 in that category.
  • McCans has 12 steals this season and 20 in her career. She is four shy of joining the program's all-time top 10 list for single-season steals and five shy of joining the program's all-time top 10 list for career steals.
  • In the circle, van Ravensberg has 23 career wins, which ranks ninth in program history. She also has 97 career strikeouts, which is nine shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in that category.
