Tiger Teams Perform Well At All-Ohio Invitational

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Wittenberg men’s and women’s track and field teams recorded a pair of strong finishes against the best NCAA Division III competition the Buckeye state has to offer at the 2013 All-Ohio Invitational, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.

The Tiger men placed ninth in the 20-team field with 39 team points. The women’s squad placed 16th with 15.5 points.

The individual highlight of the meet was another outstanding finish by sophomore Justin Yates (Dayton, Ohio/Bellbrook). He broke his own school record in the 400-meter dash in finishing in first place with a time of 48.47. That time is good for seventh in all of NCAA Division III.

Yates also was a member of the 4x400-meter relay, which finished second in the All-Ohio meet with a time of 3:18.11. He was joined on the relay by junior Chris Frierson (Cedar Hill, Texas/DeSoto), freshman Laike Wallace (Washington Court House, Ohio/Washington Court House) and freshman Asanka Ekanayake (Clarksburg, Mo./Clarksburg).

Rounding out the top performances for the Wittenberg men’s team, junior Victor Banjo (Sugarland, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) placed second in the 100-meter dash, freshman Justin Fisher (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) took fourth in the triple jump, Wallace finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles and freshman Aaron Melsop (Westerville, Ohio/DeSales) captured sixth in the long jump.

For Wittenberg’s women, the top individual finish came in the high jump, where junior Angela Roll (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto) placed fourth. Also scoring for the Tigers were freshman Brea Medlock (Galena, Ohio/Big Walnut) in sixth place in both the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash and freshman Jordan Crow (North Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde) in seventh place in the 400-meter hurdles.

Finally, the women’s 4x400-meter relay team of senior Shawna Johnson (Uhrichsville, Ohio/Claymont), Crow, freshman Becah Delp (York, Pa./Eastern York) and Medlock placed fifth.
