Tigers Open Outdoor Season With Solid Finish At Emory Invitational

ATLANTA, Ga. — The Wittenberg men's and women's track and field teams opened the outdoor portion of the 2012 season with a pair of strong performances at the Emory Invitational.

The men placed ninth in the 14-team field with 39 points. Hope won the meet with 113.50 points, just 1.5 ahead of Wilmington and 7.5 ahead of Cedarville. The women placed eighth with an identical point total, while Emory held serve in its home event with 201 points. Hope was a distant second with 111.50.

The men were paced as usual by sophomore Victor Banjo (Sugarland, Texas/Stephen F. Austin), who picked up right where he left in the indoor season, when he became just the second Tiger track and field athlete to earn indoor All-American honors. He won the 100-meter dash.

The Tigers' next best individual finish was supplied by junior Sven Isaacson (Dalton, Ohio/Dalton), who took third in the hammer throw and fifth in the discus. Sophomore Jacob Kuntz (Versailles, Ky./Woodford County) added a fourth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

The other point-scorers for Wittenberg were freshman Charles Watson (Star, Idaho/Eagle), who placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles, junior Trevor Grandy (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman), who took fifth in the 10,000 meters, and junior Justin Yates (Dayton, Ohio/Bellbrook), who crossed the line in sixth in the 400-meter dash.

On the women's side, the Tigers were paced by senior Anna Henry (Chagrin Falls, Ohio). She won the 10,000 meters with a personal best time.

Junior Paige Lloyd (Medina, Ohio/Cloverleaf) was right behind, taking second in the pole vault, while senior Darcy Dubuc (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) added a fourth in the 800 meters and freshman Shelby Kaho (Sugar Grove, Ohio/Berne Union) claimed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles.

Rounding things out was freshman Leslie Goshia (Bryan, Ohio/Bryan). She came in sixth in the long jump and seventh in the 400 meters.
