No. 16 Men's Golf takes first place at The Hershey Cup, Aber wins individual medalist honors

HERSHEY, Pa. — The No. 16 Wittenberg men's golf team won the two-day Hershey Cup tournament after shooting the second-best score in the 16-team field during Monday's final round. Senior J.F. Aber (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) led the way for the Tigers, earning individual medalist honors by two strokes in the 87-man field.

The Basics

  • Venue: Hershey Country Club - Hershey, Pa., Par 71, Yardage: 6,500
  • Playing Conditions: Conditions were much improved from a windy first round. Teams played during the solar eclipse.
  • Wittenberg is ranked No. 16 nationally in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek NCAA Division III Coaches Poll, which was released on March 22.
  • In the 16-team field, RPI, Franklin & Marshall and Gettysburg each received votes in the March 22 Bushnell/Golfweek NCAA Division III Coaches Poll.

The Tournament

  • Wittenberg won the team title by three strokes with a 31-over-par 301-298—599. The Tigers entered play Monday holding a one-shot lead over McDaniel and NYU and were one of only two teams with a sub-300 score in the second round, shooting a 14-over-par 298.
  • Rochester shot a field-best 9-over-par on Monday to improve four spots for a second-place finish with a 34-over-par 309-293—602. Franklin & Marshall placed third with a 37-over-par 305-300—605.
  • Aber won medalist honors after shooting a 2-over-par 73-71—144 in the tournament. He entered Monday in a four-way tie for third place, two shots off the lead. His second-round 71 tied for the best mark of the day and matched Sunday's top score as well.
  • Aber recorded an eagle on Hole 6 on Monday and finished the front nine at 2-under par. He had just two bogeys on the day.
  • Franklin & Marshall's Shane Lawler also shot a 71 on Monday and finished in a tie for second place with a 4-over-par 75-71—146. Allegheny's Nadir Khan was also at 4-over-par, shooting a 74-72—146.
  • Junior Jake Yarbrough (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) gave the Tigers two finishers in the top six. He finished in a four-way tie for sixth with a 6-over-par 73-75—148.
  • Senior Nicklaus Pidgeon (Homeworth, Ohio/West Branch) tied for 26th with an 11-over-par 75-78—153.
  • Junior Joshua Wright (Wadsworth, Ohio/Akron Hoban) tied for 45th with a 16-over-par 80-78—158.
  • Sophomore Mark Sulek (Delaware, Ohio/Hayes) rounded out the Wittenberg lineup with a 17-over-par 85-74—159 to finish tied for 48th.
