SPRINGFIELD — The Wittenberg men's basketball team made a late comeback but ultimately came up short in an 80-70 loss to Wooster in a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday night.
The Basics
- Records: Wittenberg (15-8 overall, 9-5 NCAC), Wooster (15-8 overall, 11-3 NCAC)
- Venue: Pam Evans Smith Arena - Springfield, Ohio
- Wittenberg celebrated Saturday's Champions Day game by recognizing the 30th anniversay of the Tigers' 1993-94 Final Four team and honoring the players and coaches from that team during a halftime ceremony. The Tigers finished 30-2 overall and 16-0 in the NCAC that season, capping it with a third-place finish in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
- Wittenberg is now 60-68 all-time against Wooster.
- Eighth-year head coach Matt Croci is now 139-59 all-time at Wittenberg.
Stat Leaders
- Junior Trey Killens (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mason) led three Tigers in double-figure scoring with 32 points. His career-high is 39 points, which came against Ohio Wesleyan earlier this season on Dec. 2.
- Senior Jeff Queen (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) was 4-of-6 from 3-point range and finished with 15 points.
- Sophomore Eddie Brown (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) added 10 points and and a team-high five rebounds.
- Ashton Price and Nick Everett led Wooster in scoring with 24 and 20 points, respectively.
The Game
- The teams played to a 25-all tie in the early going before Wooster went on an 11-2 run to take a 36-27 lead with 2:06 left in the first half.
- The Fighting Scots led 38-30 at halftime.
- The Tigers cut the deficit to four, 43-39, on a Killens free throw with 17:20 left in the game, but Wooster answered with a 15-0 run for a 58-39 edge with 12:50 remaining.
- The Scots went on to lead by as many as 21 points, but the Tigers metodically cut into their deficit down the stretch.
- A jumper from Killens cut the deficit to nine, 70-61, with 3:11 left, but the Tigers were unable to get any closer.
- Wittenberg shot 39.3% from the field and made 14 of 22 free throws.
- Wooster shot 58.1% from the floor and made 21 of 28 free throws.
- Wooster out-rebounded Wittenberg by a 31-20 margin.
- The Tigers scored 23 points off of 19 Wooster turnovers.
