Wittenberg Stays Perfect With 5-1 Win Over Sewanee

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Wittenberg Tigers kept the ball rolling, so to speak, with their fourth straight win to open the 2004 season. This time the victim was the University of the South in a game played at the University of Louisville, and the final score was 5-1.

It was another offensive outburst for the Tigers, who had scored just six goals in their first three games, including Saturday's 1-0 nailbiter over Rhodes, also at Louisville. And while the offense broke out with its second big game of the season - the Tigers defeated DePauw at home on Sept. 4 by a 4-0 score - the biggest news was that Wittenbreg's defense finally yielded a goal, its first of the season.

Junior Julia Wickham got the Tigers off to a strong start, scoring a goal off an assist from senior Blair Ufer just 1:29 into the game. Ufer added another assist less than nine minutes later, this time feeding sophomore Katy Barrett, the first goal of the season for the Tigers' leading scorer a year ago. By halftime, Wittenberg had built the lead to 3-0 on a goal by freshman Alison Voigt.

In the second half, freshman Claire Johnson found the back of the cage for the first time in her collegiate career, and Barrett closed out the scoring with 5:22 remaining. In between, Sewanee dented the Tigers' defense for a goal with 22:42 showing on the clock.

The Tigers got two saves from freshman goalkeeper Nicole Irvin, but most of the action was in Sewanee's end. Wittenberg outshot its foes 20-6 and attempted seven penalty corners to six for Sewanee.

Wittenberg is back in action on Wednesday at Denison in a key early-season North Coast Athletic Conference match-up. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
