Tigers Drop Season Opener

Springfield, OH- The Tigers met the Crusaders of Capital for the first official women's lacrosse game in The Steemer. Wittenberg had a tough match-up with Capital, who already had one win under their belt. After 60 minutes of hard play, the Tigers fell with a 22-14 score leaving Wittenberg with a 0-1 record. 

Game Breakdown: Faith Meads put the first goal on the board at 22:50 from a free position shot to lower Capital's lead to three. Libby Wadds followed to get two of her four goals back-to-back from a free position shot and unassisted run to make the score 7-3 with Capital leading. The Tigers came back with two more back-to-back goals at 15:43 from Gabby Zysik and 14:46 from Antavia Horne with an assist from Wadds. Wittenberg was able to put two more on the board in the first half with goals from Katurah Emery, and Rachael Bernard unassisted. The Tigers went into the half down 15-7.

Wittenberg went on a four-goal run to start the Tigers scoring in the second half with two goals from Zysik one assisted from Wadds. Freshman, Mya Wolfe was able to get her first career goal in the four-goal run with an assist from Zysik at 22:38. Senior, Rachel Bernard put Wittenberg's 11th goal on the board unassisted at 19:37. Senior, Zysik wasn't done and scored Wittenberg's last goal with 18 seconds on the clock with an assist from Rachel Bernard to keep the game within eight points. 

Wittenberg played a tough first game but were able to stay even with the Crusaders in draw controls for the game and an even seven goals each in the second half.  

Key Players: Wittenberg was led by two standout Tigers; freshman, Libby Wadds and senior Gabby Zysik. The duo put up a combined eight goals and three assists. Sophie Weintraub won the ground ball war for the Tigers picking up fourmwhile Antavia Horne took out four Crusaders in caused turnovers. In goal for the Tigers was sophomore Abby Sammons with seven saves.

Up Next: The Tigers will be back in action on Sunday, February 23rd. The ladies will be travelling to Otterbein to take on the Cardinals at 1 PM.
