Tigers Drop NCAC Opener To Oberlin

Springfield, OH– The Wittenberg Tigers Women's Lacrosse team fell behind early to the Oberlin Yeowomen and was unable to mount the successful comeback, falling 15-10 to the NCAC foe at Edwards-Maurer Field. In the neck-in-neck battle, Wittenberg took 18 draw control wins to the nine Yeowomen wins on the day, while the Red and White picked up 18 ground balls with 26 successful clears. The Tigers got within two of the Yeowomen early in the second half but couldn't retake the lead. 

Game Breakdown

Oberlin put four quick goals on the board in the first six minutes of the game, leaving the Tigers on the defensive until they were presented with their first chance to find the back of the Oberlin net. Only two minutes after Oberlin's fourth goal, Rachel Bernard got the Tigers' on the board with the first goal of the game for the Red and White. Oberlin put two more on the scoreboard before Madeline Stock scored with three minutes left in the half. Gretchen Burkey and Josee Clayton tallied two more goals before the first half buzzer rang, leaving the Tigers with a 7-4 deficit.

Oberlin struck first again at the top of the second half, doubling the Tigers' score at 8-4. Gabby Zysik and Bernard added two goals to the score, the game now within its closest deficit of the game, 8-6. Oberlin kept in rhythm the rest of the half, scoring 7 more times in the last 26 minutes of the game. Within visitors scoring, Zysik scored three more times, recording a second-half hattrick, with Clayton picking up her second goal as the last goal of the half. For the last five minutes of the game, the score stayed in favor of the opposition.

Who Stood Out

Zysik led in scoring for the Tigers with four goals with both Bernard and Clayton adding two goals each. Bernard picked up six groundballs while Antavia Horne picked up three. Joanna Stecz stood strong in net for the Tigers, saving 12 of the 37 shots she faced.

The Tigers will travel to Mount St. Joseph's on Wednesday, March 20th for a 7 p.m. draw. The Tigers will return home to Edwards-Maurer Field, continuing NCAC play against the Scots of Wooster on Saturday, March 23rd at 3 p.m.
