Tigers Overtake Augustana In OT

Rock Island, Ill. – The Wittenberg women's lacrosse team got back on the winning track with a 12-11 overtime win over the Vikings of Augustana College. Scoring her first goal of the day, Rachel Bernard tied the game up at 11-11 with just under a minute to go, forcing the overtime period. The Tiger offense was led by Josee Clayton, finding the back of the Augustana net six times on 10 shots on goal. Wittenberg led in nearly every statistical category in the back and forth battle, winning 13 of the 22 draw controls. The Red and White would also pick up 22 ground balls compared to Augustana's 14.

Game Breakdown

With the two sides trading goals through the early going, Clayton tallied the first three scores for the Tigers on the afternoon. A goal by Madeline Stock in the 14th minute put Wittenberg ahead 4-2 before Augustana responded with three straight goals of their own. After the Vikings took back the lead, a free positon goal by Emily Wadds brought the game back to even at 5-5, heading into the half. The back and forth battle would continue throughout the second half with Augustana opening the scoring, Wadds once again brought things back to even at 6-6. After a three-goal run by the Vikings, the Tigers responded with three straight goals of their own, as Wadds found the back of the net on the Bernard assist. Stock scored her second goal of the game, bringing the Red and White to within one. After two more Clayton goals and Wittenberg still down by one with under a minute to go, Bernard tallied her first goal of the game and force overtime. Wittenberg capitalized on the Augustana penalty in the overtime period, as Clayton slotted her sixth goal of the game to seal the 12-11 win.

Who Stood Out

Wadds took 10 draw control wins on the afternoon, while forcing eight Augustana turnovers and picking up 11 ground balls. Bernard closed out the afternoon, picking up three ground balls with one forced turnover. Joanna Stecz stood strong in goal for all 60-plus minutes, recording seven saves on 18 shots faced.

The Tigers return home on Sunday, Mar. 10 to take on the Carthage College Lady Reds. The first draw is set for 12:00 PM.
