Tigers Holdback Heidelberg For Third Straight Win

Tiffin, OH – The Wittenberg Tiger Women's Basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season, under first-year head coach Melissa Kolbe. Playing their third consecutive road game to start the 2022-23 season, the Tigers defeated the Student Princesses of Heidelberg University, 54-52, in nail-biting finish. Wittenberg's Jazmyn Gaines-Burns poured in 15 points, converting on 6 of 10 from the field. Wittenberg took an early, 17-10 lead after the first quarter of play. The two sides were deadlocked in the second quarter, going point-for-point at 13 apiece. Wittenberg would end up taking a 30-23 lead into the break, shooting nearly 45 percent from the field through the first half. Wittenberg was forced to withstand a Heidelberg comeback attempt in the second half, as the Student Princesses would outshoot the Tigers 46 to 18 percent in the final quarter of action. Wittenberg was able to withhold the home side run, as Heidelberg posted 29 points to Wittenberg's 24 over the final two-quarters.

After being a point shy of a double-double in the season opener at Earlham, Jade Simpson, finished a rebound shy of the double-double against the Student Princesses. Simpson tallied 12 points, knocking down 5 of 12 from the floor, pulling down nine rebounds and adding three steals to her total. Simpson leads the Wittenberg scoring effort, through the first three games, she averages nearly 12 points in 36 minutes of action. Also, leading the rebounding effort with 12 boards, reeling in four offensive rebounds per contest.

Evie Wolshire tabbed nine points with five rebounds, distributing three assists and coming up with two steals. Haley Scott contributed six points off the bench, knocking down 6 of 8 attempts from the charity stripe. Scott would also add seven rebounds to her total on the evening.
