Witt Softball Closes Out 2019 Season With Road Trip To Trine

Angola, Ind. – The Wittenberg University softball team closed out the 2019 season with a trip to Trine University on Sunday afternoon, dropping their final series of the season to the Thunder 13-3 in game one and 3-0 in game two. The Tigers collected 13 hits on the afternoon, as senior Abby Curnutte added to her all-time career home run total with her 18th and seventh of the season.

Game One Breakdown

Wittenberg was able to score first, plating one run in the top of the first, as Curnutte smashed her 18th career home run to put the Tigers on the board. Trine responded with three runs in the bottom half of the first to regain the lead, adding five runs between the second and third innings to extend their advantage out to 8-1. After Wittenberg went scoreless in the fourth, Trine added five more runs in the bottom half of the fourth to take a 13-1 lead. Elise Freeland executed the sacrifice fly to bring home Nikki Hawkins in the top of the fifth. An RBI double to right center by Missy Lee brought home Victoria Toetz for the third and final Wittenberg run of the game.

Game Two Breakdown

The Tigers fell behind early in game two, as Trine posted three runs in the first inning. It would be a pitchers duel through the final six innings, as Cassidy Osborne went the distance, allowing seven hits with one strikeout. Freeland closed out the season, making her way on base in all three trips to the plate with two hits with one walk.
