Burke Claims MCVL Defensive Player of the Week Honors

MCVL, U.S.A. -- The Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League today announced its Week 9 award-winners. Trine's Ted Hofmeister was chosen Offensive Player of the Week and Wittenberg's Russ Burke was the pick for Defensive Player of the Week.

Offensive Player of the Week

Ted Hofmeister, Trine (So., OH) Powell, Ohio

  • Hofmeister totaled 33 kills and a .459 hitting percentage in two matches for the Thunder.
  • The sophomore had a monster match against Wabash with 17 kills and a .727 hitting percentage, a school record.
  • Hofmeister leads the league with an average of 4.80 kills/set in MCVL matches.
  • This is Hofmeister's second Offensive Player of the Week award, winning his first three weeks ago.
  • Attended Saint Charles High School.

Defensive Player of the Week

Russ Burke, Wittenberg (Sr., OH) Johnstown, Ohio

  • Burke had 38 digs in three matches this past week.
  • The senior also set a school record for a four-set match with 22 digs against Olivet.
  • Burke leads the league in total digs (71) and digs/set (3.38) in MCVL matches.
  • He was the Offensive Player of the Week back on February 15.
  • Attended Gahanna Lincoln High School.

  • Ryan Lively, Fontbonne > 16 kills, .448 hitting percentage, 7 digs in two matches.
  • Jason Hascher, Mount St. Joseph > 29 kills, .396 hitting percentage, 14 digs in two matches.
  • Sam Matonis, Mount Union > 23 kills, .568 hitting percentage, 6 blocks in two matches.
  • Aaron Giorgi, Wittenberg > 16 kills, .213 hitting percentage, 105 assists, 24 digs in three matches.

DPOTW Best of the Rest

  • Braden Woolsey, Fontbonne > 10 blocks, 13 kills, .750 hitting percentage in two matches.
  • Rey Sanchez, Mount St. Joseph > 19 digs, 2 blocks in two matches.

 

 Notes

  • There's no getting around it; Friday's Fontbonne at Mount Union match is massive.
  • The host Raiders have a half-game lead in the standings with a 5-0 MCVL mark, while the Griffins are 4-0.
  • The next teams in the standings -- the only ones .500 or better -- are Wittenberg (4-2) and Mount St. Joseph (3-3).
  • The full league schedule this weekend is ADR @ OLI, WAB @ BWU, MSJ @ TRI, FON @ UMU on Friday; WAB @ UMU, FON @ BWU, WITT @ TRI on Saturday. Yup, that's the entire league in action.
  • The countdown turns "teendayer" this week ... 17 days (two weeks from this Friday) until the opening day of the MCVL tournament.
