Moderwell Becomes All-Time Points Leader In Win Over Pioneers

Springfield, OH- The Tigers hosted the Pioneers from Transylvania University in The Steemer for their fifth game of the 2020 season. The Red and White managed to run up the score early on in the third quarter with nine different players getting points on the board and managed to capture a 21-8 victory over the Pioneers. During the game, senior Noah Moderwell put up nine points to take the throne as the All-Time Points record holder after scoring 7 goals and pushing him to a high of 129 goals over the past four years with 190 points.

The Game Breakdown: Moderwell put up his first goal of the game in a man-up opportunity at 10:22 with an assist from Matthew Welch to give the Tigers a start to their lead. Andrew Ellis got his point on the board with an assist from Quinn McConkey off of the faceoff. Moderwell came back with 2:21 remaining in the first quarter to get his second goal, unassisted to put the Tigers up 3-1. Noah didn't stop there and went on a three-goal run in the second quarter all unassisted to put Wittenberg ahead 6-3. With a man-up opportunity and a turnover by the Pioneers, Cooper Harris found an opportunity to score with an assist from Connor Rice. The Tigers shut down Transylvania's defense in the second quarter when Lucas Klever tabbed the Tigers' sixth unanswered goal at 3:52 with a man-up. Wittenberg went into the half with a comfortable 9-4 lead and looked to extend that gap further in the second half of the game.

In the third quarter, the Pioneers went scoreless while the Tigers tallied 8 more goals from Julio Novarini, Noah Mackin with two off of assists from Rice, and Welch from Andrew Ellis. Joining that crew was Ellis with two goals from Bradley Quick and Moderwell, and Moderwell with two to lengthen the lead to 17-4. Tigers didn't slow down in the fourth quarter and put up four more goals. Rice got things started off of an assist from Moderwell with Welch following off of an assist from Ellis. Cam Kennedy unassisted picked up his first goal of the season at 7:39 and the Red and White wrapped up their lead 21-8 after an unassisted goal from Rice with 4:49 left to play.

Key Players: Noah Moderwell led the way for Wittenberg with seven goals and two assists. Tony LeBarge held down the defense with 15 ground balls and six caused turnovers. In goal for the Tigers was Max Cavellier who made 12 saves and was able to help Wittenberg go 19-22 in clear attempts.

Up Next: Over Spring Break the Tigers are heading to Whittier College to play the Poets on March 12th and then the Kean University Cougars at Whittier on March 14th.
