Tigers Open NCAC Slate With Road Win At Kenyon

Gambier, OH – The Wittenberg Tiger football team scored in bunches, with six different Tigers finding the endzone, in the 51-28 win over the Owls from Kenyon College. Maintaining a 31-14 advantage at the half, Wittenberg would go on to outscore Kenyon 20-14 through the final two quarters of action. Wittenberg amassed 603 total-yards of offense on the day, averaging 8.5 yards/play, picking up 30 first downs.

Junior quarterback Collin Brown ignited the Tiger scoring, less than five-minutes into the first quarter. Brown capped off the five-play 67-yard scoring drive with an eight-yard scamper into the Kenyon endzone, putting the Tigers' ahead, 7-0. Kenyon matched the Wittenberg score on the ensuing possession with a 75-yard scoring drive of their own, knotting things up at 7-7.

Wittenberg established the ground attack with back-to-back scores. Reed Hall was the first Tiger running back to make his way into the endzone, with just over four-minutes left in the first quarter. Hall tallied his first score of the 2022 season with a 14-yard run to complete the eight play 89-yard Wittenberg drive. Garrett Gross broke off a 24-yard touchdown score midway through the second-quarter for his first TD of the season. Both Hall and Gross would complete 89-yard scoring drives for the Tiger offense.

Making his way into the endzone for the first time in his collegiate career, Milik Bowe, tallied two scores for the Tiger offense. Brown found Bowe on an eight-yard connection, extending the Tiger lead, 28-7, with just over three minutes remaining in the half and closing out a six play 49-yard drive. Bowe and Brown would connect on 19-yard pitch-and-catch, coming out of the break, taking the Tiger lead to 38-14.

Bryce Anderson punched in his first touchdown of his senior campaign, with a one-yard score with 3:11 in the third-quarter. Anderson finished the day with 11 carries for 65 yards, breaking off a long for 19-yards.

With this win, Wittenberg improves to 1-1 and 1-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Collin Brown completed 16 of 20 passes for 325 yards with two TD's. Finding Jake Saus for his longest completion of the day for 57-yards.
  • Brown utilized his deep stable of receivers, finding eight different Tigers.
  • Bowe led the group with five receptions for 69-yards. Drew Sterett tallied three catches for 82-yards with a long of 54-yards.
  • Gross racked up 128-yards on 18 carries for his first 100-yard game of the season and the third of his career.
  • Max Yost led the Tiger defense with eight tackles and a team-high six solo takedowns.
  • Mike Knock and Tony Calovini each tallied four solo tackles for the Tiger defense.
  • Knock tabbed six tackles, including two sacks and a forced fumble.
  • Calovin came up with an interception including a 23-yard return.
  • The Wittenberg kicking unit converted on all three of their attempts. Brandon Goodwin going 2 for 2, with a long of 24-yards. Nathan Hawks 1 for 1 with a long of 32-yards.

Wittenberg will return to action on Saturday, September 24, traveling to Hiram College for a 12:00 pm kickoff.
