Hiram, OH – The No. 25 Wittenberg University football team got back to their winning ways on Saturday afternoon, taking down the Terriers of Hiram College 36-12 from the road in the NCAC opener. The Wittenberg defense would once again prove to be a tough test for the opposing offense, as the Tigers held a 7-0 lead at the half. The Tigers held Hiram to under 325 yards of total offense on the day, while racking up over 390 yards of their own with mix of ground and air attack. 

Game Breakdown

Bobby Froehlich put the first Wittenberg points on the board late in the first-quarter, capping off a 10-player 74 yard drive with a one-yard rush into the Terrier endzone. The second-quarter would prove to be a defensive stalemate with neither team able to make their way into the endzone. Wittenberg wasted no time getting the offense going in the second half, as Froehlich added his second touchdown to his total on the day, capping off an 11 play 43-yard drive, giving the Tigers the 14-0 advantage. Midway through the third-quarter Froehlich connected with Tim Woodrum on a three-yard touchdown pass, taking the Wittenberg lead to 21-0. After Hiram put their first points on the board, Danny Foster broke through the Terrier line to block the point after attempt and Thomas Scholl took the return all the way back for the two point score. Jaheem Washington broke off back-to-back 30-yard touchdown runs in the fourth quarter, sealing the Tiger win at 36-12. Jonathan Seay and Logan Jewsikow led the Tiger defense with 11 tackles apiece, each adding two tackles for a loss. Tavian Crowe posted eight tackles for the Red and White, while picking up one fumble. Troy Jones, Nasir Carter and Ben Roshon each tacked on six tackles apiece, while Roshon added the second Tiger takeaway of the day.

Wittenberg will make their home debut on Saturday, Sept. 21, hosting Champions Night, as they take on the College of Wooster from Edwards-Maurer Field. Kickoff is set for 4:30 PM.
