Tigers Defeat Earlham In Season Opener

Richmond, Ind. – The Wittenberg University baseball team opened the 2019 season with an 8-5 road win over the Quakers of Earlham College. The Tigers collected 12 hits on the afternoon, holding the Quakers scoreless through the first three innings of action.

Game Breakdown

As Wittenberg maintained a 6-5 advantage heading into the top of the ninth inning, Patrick Kenny extended the Red and White lead with a solo home run starting one last Wittenberg rally. Gage Carpenter plated the final Wittenberg run, bringing home Hayden Knox on the RBI double for the final insurance run. The Tigers jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, starting out by posting four unanswered runs in the second and third inning. A Carpenter triple in the top of the second plated Gabe Stacy for the first Tiger run of the day. Wittenberg came back for two more in the third inning, starting with a Jack Siefert two-RBI single to start, scoring Ryan Probst and Matt Baker. Carpenter brought in the final Wittenberg run of the inning on a sacrifice fly, taking the lead out to 4-0. Wittenberg added two more runs in the fourth inning, starting with a Probst double, and bringing home Baker, before Kenny brought Probst around to score on the groundout.

Tanner Griggs took to the mound to start the 2019 season for the Red and White. Griggs tossed four innings with four strikeouts and six hits allowed. Adam Mays struck out three in 1.2 innings pitched, and just three hits allowed. Aaron Fasano picked up the save while striking out one.
