10/2/2024 4:02:00 PM | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country, Paul Short Run
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The annual Paul Short Run presented by ASICS is once again upon us and is set to be hosted on Lehigh University's Goodman Campus this upcoming weekend. After hosting the first Paul Short Run five decades ago, the 50th run is slated to be the biggest one yet.
For the first time in the race's 50-year history, the Paul Short Run will be split up over the course of two days, with high school races taking place on Friday, October 4 and college races taking place on Saturday, October 5. This year, over 7,000 total athletes will compete, representing over 600 different high schools and colleges. Six high school races will be run on Friday while eight college races will occur on Saturday.
The Paul Short Run is in honor of the late Paul Short who served as Lehigh's Business Manager and Assistant Director of Athletics for 29 years. During his tenure at Lehigh, Short became an avid fan of Lehigh cross country and track and field. He was a 1934 graduate of Lehigh and Roger S. Penske/Lehigh Athletics Hall of Fame inductee in 2000 who excelled as a football, wrestling, baseball and lacrosse student-athlete.
In 1969, former Lehigh cross country and track and field head coach John Covert organized the meet with just seven teams competing. In 1981, the women joined the Paul Short Run, running a 5K which eventually changed to a 6K in 2000.
The Yale Bulldogs earned their second-ever first-place finish last year in the men's Gold 8K with 101 points, with their first coming back in 1989. Wingate earned second place with 123 points while Stony Brook rounded out the top three with 159 points. Penn State's Evan Dorenkamp finished above the rest, running the 8K in 23:53.7. Navy's Murphy Smith took home second place at 23:59.3 while Ethan Gregg of Wisconsin-La Crosse placed third at 24:00.2.
Last year's women's Gold 6K was won by Utah Valley, who scored an impressive 77 points to claim top prize. Wake Forest finished in second place with 129 points while Boston University took home third with 176 points. The race's top finisher was Judy Kosgei from South Carolina, who crossed the finish line in 19:54.9. Boston University's Hannah Prosser claimed second place (19:59.1) while Navy's Emily Boutin finished in third (20:15.8).
Manheim Township High School won first place as a team in the Boys High School Brown 5K in 2023, scoring 148 points to narrowly edge out Hershey's 149. Calvert Hall College earned third with 181 points while the race was won individually by Ringgold's Ryan Pajak. On the girls side, Morgantown High School took home first prize as a team with a score of 131, followed by Owen J. Roberts (178) and Mount Saint Joseph Academy (192).
