SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Wittenberg University men's and women's cross country teams continue the 2006 season with the annual Wittenberg Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 9, at nearby John Bryan State Park. Four schools - Muskingum College, Wilmington College, Central State University and Thomas More College - are scheduled to join the host Tigers in the competition, which starts with the men's eight-kilometer race at 10:30 a.m. and concludes with the women's five-kilometer race at 11:15 a.m.

Wittenberg kicked off the 2006 campaign with a solid race at the Hokum-Karem at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind., on Sept. 2. Wittenberg's men finished fifth and the women placed third in their first competition under new Head Coach Craig Penney. The event featured an unusual format with runners from each team paired up as relay partners to score points for the team as a whole.

The Tiger men have five returning letterwinners, while the Tiger women have seven in 2006. Wittenberg placed second in the men's Wittenberg Invitational competition a year ago, 15 points behind Wilmington. Wittenberg's women claimed second as well, finishing 16 points behind the Quakers. The Tiger men went on to finish ninth in the North Coast Athletic Conference championships for a second straight year and the Tiger women placed eighth, also for a second straight year.
