No. 4 Tigers Blast Past Battlin Bishops

Delaware, Ohio – The No. 4 Wittenberg women's volleyball team took down the Battlin' Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-14) from the road. The Tigers had to fend off Ohio Wesleyan through the first set, before going on to cruise through the final two. Wittenberg moves to 16-2 on the season and remains unbeaten at 5-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference action.

WHO STOOD OUT:

Haley Horner would lead the Tiger offense with nine kills on the afternoon, recording a .368 kill percentage and providing four blocks up front. Karen Wildemann was the attacking leader swinging .667 in her planned-out attacks. Wildemann added 32 assists, four digs, and a block. Aubrey Cox and Kennedey Schmidt would each provide seven kills for the Tigers and combine for five blocks up front at the Wittenberg net.

First Set Breakdown:

The Tigers had to fend off Ohio Wesleyan in the first set, taking an early 9-7 lead. Ohio Wesleyan would battle back to take a 13-9 lead. After Horner and Cox combined on the block assist to stop the Ohio Wesleyan scoring rally, Megan Flaherty began a service rally of six serves which included two aces. The Tigers would hang on to take the first set win, keeping a four-point lead throughout the set.

Second Set Breakdown:

It would be another back and forth battle in the second set, as the Tigers would not find their first significant advantage until 12-9. Taylor Brown gave the Tigers their first lead on the service ace starting a four-serve rally. Cox would go on a service run of her own as the Tigers had stretched their advantage out to 17-10. Madison Manger and Flaherty would each provide an ace against Ohio Wesleyan, as the Tigers took the second set.

Third Set Breakdown:

Wittenberg would jump out to an early 11-5 lead in the final set. Ohio Wesleyan would bring the match back to within two points at 11-9. The Tigers would push their lead out to eight points at 18-19 and then expanding it even further at 20-11. Wittenberg would keep Ohio Wesleyan off the board after their final scoring run, going on to take the final five straight points of the match.

Wittenberg will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 16 when they host NCAC rival DePauw from Pam Evans Smith Arena at 7:00 PM.
