No. 5 Tigers Overtake Gators In Straight Sets

Springfield, Ohio – The No. 5 Wittenberg women's volleyball team celebrated the 2018 Homecoming festivities with a 3-0 (25-8, 25-16, 25-13) win over the Gators of Allegheny College on Saturday afternoon from Pam Evans Smith Arena.

 

Who Stood Out:

For the second day in a row, Haley Horner would lead the Wittenberg attack with 11 kills finishing with a .375 hitting percentage and four total blocks. Aubrey Cox and Sidney Reeder would each finish with 11 kills combined. Cox would log a  team-high .875 attacking percentage on the afternoon, providing four blocks up front for the Tiger defense. Taylor Yontz provided 14 digs and four assists for the Tigers on the day. 

 

First Set Breakdown

Wittenberg would take control of the match early, jumping out to a quick 9-0 advantage. After the Gators logged their first point of the match, the Tigers would continue their offensive dominance adding onto their lead at 18-2. Wittenberg sealed the first-set win, closing out the Gators on a Cora Lutz service ace, followed by a Karen Wildemann kill.

 

Second Set Breakdown

Wittenberg captured the lead early on, going 5-0 before the Gators made it on to the board. Keeping their lead throughout the set, the Tigers kept their offense and defense sharp. The Tigers ended the set, 25-16, after a serve from the Gators leading to a kill from Aubrey Cox.

 

Third Set Breakdown

The Gators were the first to score in the set, but the Tigers followed quickly with a kill from Haley Horner. Going back and forth through the set until a kill from Haley Horner put the Tigers ahead by two. Wittenberg closed the set after an Allegheny went on a serving run of their own, as the Tigers still managed to control the score 25-13, sealing the win of three sets for the Tigers.

Wittenberg will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 10 taking on the Big Red of Denison University from Granville in a 7:00 PM showdown.
