Tigers Take Care Of Transylvania In Straight Sets

Springfield, Ohio – The #3 Wittenberg University women's volleyball team hosted the Pioneers of Transylvania University on Wednesday evening from Pam Evans Smith Arena. The Tigers made quick work of the Pioneers with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-19) win in front of their home crowd. Wittenberg put on display a new line-up in their first mid-week single matchup of the season, moving to 9-1 on the season before heading into North Coast Athletic Conference over the weekend. Kennedey Schmidt led the Wittenberg attack with 11 kills on 26 attack attempts, hitting .308 on the night.

First Set Breakdown

Wittenberg would jump out to an early 10-5 lead over Transylvania. The Tigers maintained their advantage at 17-7 through the Madison Manger service, as Haley Horner and Gabi Hancock each collected kills on assists from Karen Wildemann. Aubrey Cox would add two service aces in the first set. Wittenberg kept their foot on the gas to end the first set, as the Tigers would lead 22-9 before going on to finish the set.

Second Set Breakdown

The two sides would battle back and forth in the second set, as each team refused to budge on giving up the advantage. Wittenberg and Transylvania would trade points, with the second set going back to even as many as eight times before the Tigers took the 16-13 lead. Once the Tigers captured the lead, they wouldn't look back moving on to take the set 25-20.

Third Set Breakdown

Wittenberg and Transylvania would continue the back and forth battle in the third set. The Tigers would jump out to an early lead, going up 9-5 while maintaining a steady advantage. The Tigers would extend their lead later in the third, going up 19-14, after a kill by Cox followed up by a block by Schmidt and Cox. Wittenberg kept their five-point advantage at 21-16 with back-to-back kills by Cox and Schmidt.

Wittenberg will head to Oberlin on Saturday afternoon to open up NCAC action, taking on the Yeowomen in a 1:00 PM showdown.
