SPRNGFIELD, Ohio—#3 Wittenberg women's volleyball ran the gauntlet at their annual Fall Classic tournament on Friday and Saturday, as the Tigers remained undefeated following the end of the weekend. The Tigers moved to 9-0 with 3-1 wins over #12 Washington University-St. Louis, and Ohio Northern. Oddly enough, Wittenberg dropped the first set of each match on Saturday, but turned around and rattled off three consecutive set wins against the nationally-classed opponents.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Wittenberg defeated the Bears of Wash-U to the tune of 22-25, 25-14, 25-17, and 25-15 before turning around and dropping ONU 8-25, 25-23, 25-14 and 25-21. The Tigers slugged .281 in the match against the Bears, and .119 against the Polar Bears. Wittenberg recorded 15 attack errors against Wash-U, while the Bears fell victim to 24 attack errors in the first match of the day. The Tigers got off to a slow start in the second match of the day, tallying a season low eight points in first set against ONU. The Tigers turned it around through the next three sets, completing the 3-0 weekend.

WHO STOOD OUT:  Maddie Fischer tallied 31 total kills on the day for the Tigers, giving her 119 through nine matches for the Tigers. Taylor Yontz stepped up big for Wittenberg on Saturday, recording games of 18 and 31 digs while chipping in eight kills. The Tigers also received a major contribution from Freshman Haley Horner, who chipped in 15 kills.

NOTABLE: Upon the completion of the tournament, Yontz and junior Madison Manger were named to the all-tournament team. The Tigers 9-0 start is the Tigers best start since the 2007 season when Wittenberg started off the season 26-0. Wittenberg's impressive 9-0 start has had its fair share of theatrics, as the Tigers have put on show after show at Pam Evans Smith arena to start the year.

QUOTABLE: "The team showed great resilience today. Both Wash U and Ohio Northern are extremely physical teams with excellent coaches. The level in the gym these past two days really set a tone for our move into NCAC play. The homecoming weekend crowd was a huge boost for the team. We turn our attention to next weekend and our matches with Oberlin and Muskingum," said Coach Labrador.
