#5 Wittenberg Spoils Big Red Home-Opener; 3-1

GRANVILLE, Ohio—Wittenberg women's volleyball spoiled the Big Red of Denison's home-opener on Thursday night, as the Tigers took down the home team, 3-1. Wittenberg dropped the first set 25-23 after leading by as many as ten points, but went on to re-group and rattle off three straight set victories at; 25-15, 25-22, and 25-16. Wittenberg was led by Camila Quiñones  and Maddie Fischer, who each produced 12 kills in the match. The Tigers improve to 3-0 in NCAC play with the victory, as well as 9-3 overall in 2016. The Big Red of Denison fall to 6-10 overall and 1-1 in NCAC play with the 3-1 loss.

MATCH NOTES

  • The Tigers led by as many as ten in the first set before allowing the Big Red back into the set, eventually slipping away from the Tigers at 25-23.  
  • Wittenberg bounced back to command a ten-point lead, as the Tigers took set two 25-15.
  • Set two saw the Tigers produce a match-high 15 kills with only three attack errors, for a percentage of .414.
  • Set three was all Tigers as well, as Wittenberg fended off a late Big Red attack to hold on 25-22.
  • In set four, the Tigers proved to be too much for Denison in their home-opener, as Wittenberg quieted the feisty crowd with a 25-16 game, set, match victory.
  • Wittenberg produced four errors in the fourth set on the attack for a percentage of .281, including 13 kills.

KEY STATS

  • Fischer and Quiñones continued to produce eye-popping offensive numbers in NCAC play, as the duo combined for 29 points in the match.
  • Karen Wildemann continued to be a spark plug for the Tigers, as the sophomore racked up 22 assists and 12 digs on the night.
  • Megan Flaherty aided the Tigers hitters as well, as the sophomore setter recorded 19 assists and seven digs in the NCAC victory.
  • Freshman Aubrey Cox has done nothing but shine for the Tigers this season, as the Tipp City native led the Tigers with seven blocks on the night. 
  • Six of the Tigers nine wins in 2016 have come with set scores of 3-1 in the Tigers favor, while the remaining three have come at 3-0.
