Tigers Sweep Scholarship Foes Urbana, Fairmont State

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers made short work of a pair of NCAA Division II scholarship programs, defeating visiting Urbana and Fairmont State.

Wittenberg, ranked fourth nationally in NCAA Division III, improved 17-2 on the 2011. Urbana dropped to 6-16, while Fairmont State is now 11-8.

Against Urbana, the Tigers won by scores of 25-12, 25-8, 25-7 while giving most of the players on the roster court time. The offense was paced by senior Christine Simpson (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto) with 11 kills and a .381 attack percentage, while freshman Meghan Vodopich (Canton, Ohio/Perry) dished out 28 assists.

Also of note was the play of senior Kimmie Dyer (Copley, Ohio/Copley), who led both teams in digs with 14 and piled up a staggering eight service aces.

Wittenberg then added set wins over Fairmont State 25-10, 25-10, 25-18. Junior Jessica Batanian (Sylvania, Ohio/Notre Dame) paced the offense with 10 kills, while junior Hallie Donathan (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) handed out 19 assists.

Four players reached double figures in digs, led by junior Christina Gilene (Milford, Ohio/McNicholas) with 16 and Batanian with 15.

The Tigers have two more home matches on Saturday, with North Coast Athletic Conference rival Wooster and scholarship program Alderson Broaddus paying Wittenberg a visit
