Tigers Pick Up Key Regional Victories Over Heidelberg And Thomas More

CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers put the finishing touches on a perfect weekend at Mount St. Joseph's Charlie Wrublewski Tournament with a pair of 3-0 wins over top Great Lakes Region rivals Heidelberg and Thomas More.

Coupled with a 3-0 sweep of the host team on Friday, Wittenberg now stands 6-0 on the young season. Three more regional rivals await next weekend as the Tigers return to action against Hope, defending national champion Calvin and Bluffton.

Against 11th-ranked Heidelberg, the Tigers won the three sets by scores of 25-21, 25-18, 25-19. The offensive leaders were seniors Katie Sumner (Dublin, Ohio/Watterson) and Hannah Riley (Minerva, Ohio/Minerva) with nine kills apiece. Sumner attacked at a .380 clip. Defensively, senior Kimmie Dyer (Copley, Ohio/Copley) led with 13 digs, while Riley contributed 12.

Wittenberg rounded its weekend with a 25-17, 25-11, 25-19 win over Thomas More. Sumner was outstanding again, finishing with 13 kills and no errors on 23 attack attempts. Defensively, Sumner led with five blocks, while Riley was high in digs with 18.
