Tigers Start Homecoming Weekend With Win Over Allegheny

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Homecoming Weekend started well for the Wittenberg volleyball team, as they rolled to a 3-0 win Friday night over the visiting Allegheny Gators, improving to 17-2 overall and 7-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference in the process.

Junior outside hitter Kimmie Dyer (Copley, Ohio/Copley) paced the Tiger offense with 13 total kills on .321 hitting to go with three service aces and eight digs.

A pair of Wittenberg hitters, junior middle hitter Katie Sumner (Dublin, Ohio/Watterson) and sophomore outside hitter Jessie Batanian (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame) had error-free nights on the attack. Batanian was 8-for-16 (.500) and Sumner finished 6-of-9 (.666). Both had two aces from the service line.

Junior outside hitter Christine Simpson (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto) also chipped in seven kills, many coming on the strong setting of senior Amy Cox (Newark, Ohio/Catholic). She finished the match with 35 assists. Sophomore libero Christina Gilene (Milford, Ohio/McNicholas) led the team in digs with 25, while Cox, Sumner, Simpson and junior middle hitter Miranda Sagle (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee) all shared the team-lead with two block assists.

The Tigers return to the hardwood tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 9, to take on visiting Hiram and attempt to even the season series with the Terriers in Pam Evans Smith Arena at 1 p.m.
