Volleyball Standout Amy Cox Earns Academic All-District Honors

Amy Cox

Springfield, Ohio — Wittenberg University volleyball standout Amy Cox, class of 2011 from Newark, Ohio, has been recognized for the combination of her athletic and academic accomplishments with second-team CoSIDA Academic All-America College Division All-District IV honors.

The honor is the first for Cox in her collegiate career. She was selected as a result of online voting conducted recently by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Student-athletes who make the first-team in district voting are considered for Academic All-America awards.

Cox, an education major, carries a 3.71 grade point average while participating in a wide variety of extracurricular activities at Wittenberg. She is a member of Mortar Board, multiple academic and leadership honoraries, student government, the Emerging Leaders program and Ivy Ring, in addition to service work performed in the impoverished African kingdom of Lesotho in 2009.

Cox has led the second-ranked Tigers to another spectacular season, although she has followed an unlikely path to her current setter position. Cox earned letters each of the previous three years as a right-side hitter, earning second-team All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) honors for her outstanding play in 2009. This year, Cox has slid over to the setter spot as the team's lone senior, and she has elevated the Tigers' play to the tune of a 28-2 record, heading into this weekend's NCAC Tournament and next week's NCAA Division III Tournament.

Cox ranks among the best in the NCAC in assists, to go along with 86 kills, 28 blocks and 146 digs on the season. Her performance in the first tournament of 2010, the Wittenberg National Invitational, set the stage for her breakout season as she earned NCAC and American Volleyball Coaches Association national Player of the Week honors while leading the Tigers to wins over three nationally ranked foes.

During Cox's collegiate career, the Tigers have won four NCAC regular season titles with just one loss, and three NCAC Tournament titles. Wittenberg has been selected as one of eight host schools for the NCAA Division III Tournament, which begins Thursday, Nov. 11.
