Tigers Bounce Back For Second Day Sweep At Heidelberg Quad

TIFFIN, Ohio - After their first loss in more than a month on Friday against nationally ranked Heidelberg, the Wittenberg Tigers made full use of their expansive roster to complete a second-day sweep at the Heidelberg Quad Saturday with wins over Webster and Carthage.

The wins moved the Tigers to 21-4 overall on the 2009 season, heading into their North Coast Athletic Conference regular season finale against Ohio Wesleyan at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28. Wittenberg then jumps back into tournament play on the final weekend of the regular season at Trinity (Texas). There, the Tigers will take on top-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh, second-ranked Juniata and 17th-ranked Trinity.

Against Webster, the Tigers went with a youth movement in the starting lineup, and the returns were good in the first set as Wittenberg ran out to a 25-15 win. However, Webster rallied for wins of 25-19 and 25-23 to put Wittenberg on its heels. Using 17 of the 23 players on his roster, Head Coach Paco Labrador coaxed set decisions of 25-19 and 15-11 from his team for a 3-2 victory.

Individually, Wittenberg was paced on offense by sophomore Kimmie Dyer (Copley, Ohio/Copley) with 12 kills to go along with eight digs. Sophomore Elyse Adams (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) added 11 kills and a .348 attack percentage, while sophomore Katie Sumner (Dublin, Ohio/Watterson) was also strong with five kills on just seven swings and junior Amy Cox (Newark, Ohio/Catholic) rounded things out with seven kills and a .353 attack percentage.

Defensively, freshman Christina Gilene (Milford, Ohio/McNicholas) was tops with 27 digs, followed by sophomore Hannah Riley (Minerva, Ohio/Minerva) with 13. Riley and Sumner each finished with three blocks, while freshman Jordan Mungovan (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) dished out a team-high 21 assists.

Against ninth-ranked Carthage, the Tigers again jumped out to a lead, taking Set 1 by a whopping 25-10 margin and following that up with a 25-23 decision in the second set. After Carthage got on the board with a 25-17 win, Wittenberg put the match away with a 25-22 victory for a 3-1 final margin.

Individual leaders included senior Erin Slattery (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) with a fine all-around match that included 26 assists, three kills in four attempts and nine digs. Sophomore Catherine Farny (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) led with 12 kills, followed by Dyer with 10 kills and a team-high 23 digs, and Sumner chipped in with nine kills on a .389 attack percentage and five blocks.
