Ohio Northern Tops Webster, 3-0, In NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Quarterfinal

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Playing in the opening game of the Great Lakes Regional, Ohio Northern University proved why they are the No. 10 ranked team in the country. The Polar Bears defeated Webester University 3-1. Ohio Northern started fast in Game one, leading 10-2 and then 22-9, and did not look back, defeating the Gorloks by scores of 30-18, 30-20 and 30-17.

Leading the way for the Polar Bears' offense were the usual suspects: Liz Schnelle with 14 kills and Laura Vuyk with 11 kills. Setter Katie Weininger dished out 43 assits to help the Ohio Northern offense. Defensively, the Polar Bears were paced by Amanda Fought with 24 digs. Schnelle also chipped in defensively with three solo and two block assists.

Webster, which was making its second straight NCAA Division III Tournament appearance, was paced by Jackie Schawll on offense with 8 kills and Abby Williams added 13 assists.

Webster, the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion, bowed out of the tournament with a 25-10 overall record, while Ohio Northern, regular season and tournament titlist in the Ohio Athletic Conference, advanced to play North Coast Athletic Conference runner-up Hiram in the regional semifinal match at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9.
