Wittenberg Reaches 16th Straight NCAC Tourney Final With Win Over Earlham

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers extended the longest winning streak in college volleyball - regardless of division - with a 3-0 win over Earlham in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament semifinals Friday in the university's newly re-named Pam Evans Smith Arena in the HPER Center.

By scores of 30-21, 30-19, 30-20, top-seeded Wittenberg ran its record to 33-0 overall after posting a 14-0 record in NCAC regular season action. Earlham, the No. 4 seed, ended its season with a 13-16 overall record after finishing 6-8 in the NCAC regular season. The Tigers advanced to their 16th straight NCAC Tournament championship match, which will be played at 2 p.m. Saturday, also in Pam Evans Smith Arena.

The Tigers slowly pulled away to win each of the three games. The key was pinpoint offense by Wittenberg, as three players reached double figures in kills and the team posted a .344 attack percentage on 60 kills and 15 errors on 131 attempts. Senior outside hitter Emily Bell led with 15 kills, backed by junior outside hitter Jackie Williams with 11 (and an attack percentage of .588) and senior outside hitter Jan Kehres with 10.

Earlham, which is one of just five teams all year to get a game off Wittenberg, attacked at a .104 clip, led by Lisa Vanderkolk with nine kills and Jessica Whitaker with seven.

Defensively, Wittenberg was paced by junior libero Laura Fender with 24 digs and Kehres with 18. The Tigers brought 70 attacks up with digs on 125 Earlham attacks. In addition, the Tigers finished with nine team blocks, led by Williams with five (one solo and four assists).

On the flip side, Earlham managed 59 digs and 3.5 blocks on Wittenberg's 131 attack attempts.
