Wittenberg Defeats Mount Union in Home Opener

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers fought off a tough OAC foe in the opening game of the Wittenberg Invitational. The host Tigers improved to 5-0 on the season and 1-0 in the tournament with the 3-0 victory over Mount Union.

Wittenberg battled to a 30-23, 33-31, 30-26 victory. It is the Tigers' fourth 3-0 victory in only five matches this season.

Mount Union proved to be a tough opponent for Wittenberg, as the Purple Raiders led late in each of the three games. However, Wittenberg stood up to the Purple Raider challenge and found ways to erase each deficit that was handed to them. Freshman Emily Bell was outstanding, contributing 11 kills and six aces to the team's winning effort. The Tiger offense was led by junior Emily Dixon and senior Kristin Fox with 13 and 12 kills, respectfully. Senior Sarah Yuskewich continued her All-American form with a team-best 48 assists. Junior Linda Young came up big late in the third game for the Tigers with some key points coming off several kills and a block. Senior Emilie Schmid continued to define the libero position with a team best 25 digs.

The Tigers continue play tomorrow with games against Wilmington College and Waynesburg College.
