Barnes and Gittins Named All-Region

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Two Tiger track and field athletes were named All-Great Lakes Region, as decided by the USTFCCA.

Tyra Barnes was recognized for her performance in the 400 meter dash. She debuted her college campaign earlier this year, and continued her sprint to the finish through the NCAC Championships. Later to be named Second Team All-NCAC, the freshman raced her fastest 400 meter dash at All-Ohio Invitational, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University, with a time of 57.22 seconds. Earlier this season, she also had the opportunity to run against top-tier athletes at the Jesse Owens Classic hosted by Ohio State University, placing 24th overall in the 400 meter dash. Barnes also raced in the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, the 4x100 meter relay, and the 4x400 meter relay this season.

Tyler Gittins was recognized for his performance in the 400 meter hurdles. The junior edges his way toward a school record, as he prepares for the championship meet, currently ranked 14th in the nation for Division III going into the championship meet, after qualifying at the Baldwin-Wallace Harrison Dillard Twilight Invitational with a time of 53.07 seconds where the junior claimed a first place finish for the fourth time this season. He recently raced a 54.36 at the NCAC Championships, finding himself with First Team All-NCAC recognition. He also had the opportunity to run alongside top athletes at the Jesse Owens Classic, placing fifth overall in his event with a time of 53.79 seconds. Gittins is set to run the 400 meter preliminaries at 3:15 PM on Thursday, May 26. If qualifying for the finals, he will race at 2:25 PM on Saturday, May 28.
