Tigers Open Spring Season With 8-1 Win Over Shawnee State

Dayton, Ohio – The Wittenberg University women's tennis team kicked off its 2018-19 spring season with an 8-1 win over Shawnee State on Saturday afternoon at the Five Seasons Sports Club in Dayton.

Who Stood Out

Wittenberg stormed out to an early 3-0 lead in the match after doubles play, led by the duo junior Sarah Gallup and sophomore Harunya Ravindran logging an 8-3 win in the top doubles flight. Sophomore Kathleen McGuff and freshman Sarah Wilke were 8-1 winners in the second position, while seniors Carli Milano and Alivia Livesay closed out doubles play with an 8-2 win in the third flight.

The Tigers were also victorious in the top five singles flights against the Bears, led by Milano earning a 6-2, 6-1 win in the top flight over Jessica Willard. Gallup was a 6-2, 6-1 winner of Shelby Hay in the second position, while Livesay rounded out the top three with a 6-0, 6-0 clean sweep of Regan Osborn in the third flight. At fourth singles, Wilke won 6-4 in the first set, before being declared the winner of Caleigh O'Neal via retirement, while freshman Josie Paazig closed out the match for the Tigers with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Claire Carruthers in the fifth singles flight.

The Tigers will return to action next Friday, kicking off their Spring Break southern swing with a 3:00 p.m. match at Transylvania, before taking on Johnson University (TN) on March 2nd and Sewanee (TN) on March 4th.
