Tigers Take Pair To Open Spring Break Trip

HILTON HEAD, SC — The Wittenberg Tigers extended their unbeaten streak to seven on the 2010-11 season with a pair of victories to open a busy Spring Break week in Hilton Head, SC. 

The Tigers defeated Mount St. Mary's by a 6-3 margin and then came back a few hours later to post a 5-4 victory over three-time defending Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) champion Baldwin-Wallace. The wins moved Wittenberg to 7-0 overall, heading into a day away from competition before playing a pair of matches on Wednesday, March 9.

Wittenberg started the day with a singles rally for the win over Mount St. Mary's. After the Tigers lost two of the three doubles matches but bounced back to win five of the six doubles matches. The key wins were turned in at the Nos. 4 and 5 positions as junior Maggie Stewart (Bay Village, Ohio/Magnificat) won a third-set tiebreaker at the fourth spot and junior Jackie Stevens (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson) picked up a 7-5, 6-3 victory at the fifth spot.

The second match of the day started with two wins in three doubles matches for the Tigers over Baldwin-Wallace. Then the two teams split the six singles matches.

Freshman Leah Ann Miller (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central) was a double-winner at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles, while senior Jayne Miely (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) followed up her singles win in the day's opener with wins at No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles against B-W. In addition, senior Rachel Bundy (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) won at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles with Miely.
