Season Outlook

Jayne Miely

Coming off a record-breaking 15-5 season in 2008-09, the Wittenberg womens tennis team hopes to keep the momentum going with another strong run in the 2009-10 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) title chase.

Junior co-captain Jayne Miely (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) takes over the No. 1 singles position in 2009-10, a year after turning in one of the best seasons in school history. Playing primarily No. 2 singles, Miely posted a 13-2 record, in addition to her 15-1 overall doubles mark. Miely and sophomore Jackie Stevens (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson)were a perfect 15-0 together in 2008-09, playing primarily at the No. 3 doubles position. In the fall, Miely went 1-3 at No. 1 singles and 3-1 with Stevens at No. 2 doubles.

Senior co-captain Emily Nash (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) is also back for the Tigers, a year after posting a 10-6 singles record while primarily playing the No. 3 position. After playing sparingly in doubles a year ago, Nash teamed with sophomore co-captain Anne Beauch (North Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) at No. 1 doubles in the fall, posting a 2-3 record in the first five matches.

Stevens and fellow sophomores Alexandra Cummins (New Lebanon, Ohio/Dixie)and Maggie Stewart (Bay Village, Ohio/Magnificat) are key players for the Tigers in 2009-10, and their continued improvement will go a long way toward the teams ultimate success. In addition to her doubles exploits in 2008-09, Stevens posted a 10-2 singles record as a freshman, while Cummins went 14-3 in singles a year ago. Stewart primarily played doubles in her inaugural collegiate campaign, posting a 14-5 mark with three different partners.

Rounding things out, senior Sean Delaney (Powell, Ohio/Worthington Christian)is back after spending the fall semester studying abroad. A two-year starter in the doubles line-up, Delaney played with an assortment of partners a year ago, finishing 8-9 overall to go along with a 4-2 singles record at the No. 6 position. Junior Rachel Bundy (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) stepped in during the fall season, starting all five matches at either No. 2 or No. 3 singles.
