Springfield, Ohio – The Wittenberg women's soccer team collected their first win of the young 2018 season on Sunday afternoon at Edwards-Maurer Field, blanking visiting Wisconsin-Whitewater, 3-0, on a sunny, hot and humid day in Springfield. The early season test for the Tigers featured a pair of squads that both qualified for the NCAA Tournament just one season ago.

How the Tigers Scored

While scoring opportunities were limited in the first half of the match, the Tigers took advantage of one midway through the opening stanza. Freshman defender Sydney Weaver raced down the near sideline and sent in a beautiful crossing pass into the box that found the foot of senior midfielder Shannon Brueck who fired a shot past Whitewater goalie Nina Yonan to put the Tigers up 1-0.

The Tigers struck again midway through the second half as Weaver fired a shot on goal that ricochet off the left post and right into the waiting foot of freshman forward Alix Steele who knocked a shot past Yonan to give Wittenberg the 2-0 advantage in the 62nd minute of action. Weaver was credited with her second assist of the match on the goal.

Wittenberg closed out the scoring in the 80th minute as Weaver got a goal of her own off a perfectly placed crossing pass from sophomore midfielder Bailey Hurley.

By the Numbers

Wittenberg dominated in nearly every facet of the match against the Warhawks, holding a 12-3 advantage in total shots, a 9-2 edge in shots on goal and attempting four corner kick opportunities compared to zero for UWW.
