Women's Soccer Ties #5 Centre in Double-Overtime Battle

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio—Wittenberg women's soccer took the number five team in the country to double-overtime on Wednesday night in Springfield, as the Tigers had Centre College on the ropes all night. Wittenberg managed to take an early lead in the match as Megan Davis was awarded a penalty kick twelve minute into the game. The sophomore scored her first goal of the season for the Tigers, giving her team a 1-0 lead until the 84th minute of the match, when the tables turned and Centre was awarded a penalty kick, resulting in a score. With the game knotted up at 1-1, both extra periods would end in a stalemate, as the hard fought battle ended in a tie. Wittenberg moves to 2-1-2 with the tie, as the Tigers have shown extremely well against multiple matchups with teams ranked in the top-ten in the nation.

 

GAME BREAKDOWN

  • With both goals in the match coming off of penalty kicks, there were plenty of shots on both sides in regulation and overtime, as Centre edged out the Tigers in the category 11-9.
  • Davis, Jordyn Wright, and Morgan Jones led the Tigers with two shots apiece in the match.
  • Hannah Wilson logged all 110:00 minutes in net for Wittenberg, as the junior keeper recorded three saves on the night.

FROM THE BENCH

  • "Ultimately we are very dissapointed not to have won the game... We know what we need to do to perform at this level consistently for the rest of the season," said Coach Fannon. 

ON THE NATIONAL STAGE

  • Wittenberg ha shown well on the national stage in 2016, as the non-conference schedule for the Tigers has been extremely challenging. 
  • 9/1/16- Wittenberg dropped a 3-0 match to #7 Thomas More after allowing three first half goals, pushing the top ranked team all night. 
  • 9/3/16- The Tigers dropped then ranked #10 Wisconsin Whitewater in Springfield 3-2, a Missy Bernhardt floated a lob into the net as seconds winded down. 
  • 9/14/16- Wittenberg had the #5 team in the nation, Centre College, on the ropes until the 84th minute, when a late Centre goal would send the game in to double-overtime, ending in a tie.
